Hello! We’re Janet and John, owners of The Hungry Hollow, a family-owned sandwich shop in Albany, NY. As two retired state workers, we are thrilled to realize our lifelong dream of opening a restaurant, while also serving the Sheridan Hollow Neighborhood and surrounding communities. Our son Chris, a graduate of Schenectady County Community College’s Culinary Arts program, runs our day-to-day operations. Our daughter Lauren lives in New York City, but manages our online presence from afar, including the photography and content for our website and social pages.
While this started as a true family endeavor, we’re also very lucky to have found a staff comprised of passionate, energetic, and driven individuals to help us hit the ground running, most of whom are Sheridan Hollow residents within walking distance of the shop. We’re super proud of that last point, as being able to bring jobs and business to one of Albany’s emerging neighborhoods is the main reason we chose to build our shop at 203 Sheridan Avenue. When we first learned of the Sheridan Hollow Neighborhood Revitalization project in the summer of 2012, it just felt right - we knew we’d found our spot. Fast forward five years through several rounds of project plans, symbolic groundbreakings, actual groundbreakings, shop blueprints, a kitchen buildout, hiring staff… and here we are. There’s no place we’d rather be.
Many thanks are owed to the Sheridan Hollow Neighborhood Association, Habitat for Humanity, Housing Visions, the Touhey Homeownership Foundation, the New Jerusalem Home of the Saved Church, the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce, the Community Loan Fund, Pioneer Bank, the residents of Sheridan Hollow, and countless others who helped and supported us along the way. We look forward to being a part of this great community as it continues to grow, revive, and thrive in the years to come.
